“Double Deception” – a short story

If you have ever lived in a close-knit suburb, small village or on a street where curtains twitch every time anyone walks by, you’ll understand why keeping secrets from neighbours is almost impossible. Gossip is simply people telling stories – sometimes they are innocent, on other occasions the tittle-tattle can be malicious.

In contrast, it is often said that you never know what goes on behind closed doors – the secrets that are hidden from the outside world. In “Double Deception“, one of the short stories in the collection called “A Pair of Ospreys“, we learn secrets are frequently complex and not always desirable. We meet Antony, a man whose double life is weighing him down. The more he lies, the more difficult his life becomes. How will he resolve his situation?

Set in a provincial town in England, Antony and Bridie, a childless married couple, rub along well enough, but all is not what it seems. We see their lives through the observations of one of their neighbours, Donna, whose eagle eyes allow the reader to learn that all is not sweetness and light at number five Cherry Tree Drive. When she shares her findings, she quickly realises that sharing them with a friend can get her into hot water.
